George Lewis Canfield was born in Detroit in 1864, attending public schools in the city. After graduating in 1888 from University of Michigan Law School, Mr. Canfield went into law practice with his father, Frank H. Canfield, a prominent admiralty lawyer, in the firm of Moore and Canfield. He and his father were associated in the firm of F.H. and G.L. Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990.
